Can you get married in the Catholic Church if you intend to adopt children instead of having them yourself?

Having children is a requirement of Catholic marriage. Does adoption fulfill the requirement of being ';open to life,'; or do couples have to promise to be open to having biological children in order to marry in the Catholic Church?

I know that adoption is allowed if there's a medical reason that the couple cannot have biological children of their own. But what if they simply don't want to have biological children because they would prefer to give a home to a child who needs one? Is that permitted by the Catholic Church? Can you get married in the Catholic Church if you intend to adopt children instead of having them yourself?
You definitely have to be open to having biological children, which means no sterilization and no artificial birth control, and yes, you have to promise this in order to be married.

However, adoption is supported and encouraged for any couple who has room in their hearts and homes to do so. Can you get married in the Catholic Church if you intend to adopt children instead of having them yourself?
Marriage is life-giving. So you do have to be open to life, but remember the catholic church does agree with natural family planning, so if you don't want to have children avoid having sex at your most fertile times every month. I'm pretty sure you don't have to have children before you can adopt, for the simple reason that some couples cannot have children so therefore can never wait until after they've had their own children to adopt.

Also, children are a gift so i would really consider my position on 'not wanting' children. why would you be angry about, or turn down a gift from God? because he does know what's best.

For more information look up adoption in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

God Bless

having children is not a requirement of Catholic marriage. being open to life is kind of part of Catholic doctrine though. adoption is absolutely fantastic in the eyes of the Church, regardless of whether you are physically able to have biological children or not. However, this being said, birth control is not really considered acceptable in the Church. I suggest you talk to your pastor, he'll be able to help you figure it all out!
NO, you need to have biological children before you can adopt. I mean that is why you married the person to reproduce. but yeah adopt right away after you have your own children. Also, it would be really hard to not have a baby and have sexual intercourse because in the Roman Catholic Faith we can not use birth control pills or condoms. Don't deny a life into earth.
';Open to life'; basically means you won't use contraception or do anything else to intentionally render the marital act unfruitful.

There is an obligation for married couples to produce biological children UNLESS they have a good reason not to (age, genetic disease, health problems, etc.)
Hello,

Sure, I married my wife in the church after her child bearing years were over and had no attention of adopting. The priest only suggested that since children were not an option we could devote some of that freed up child rearing time to doing some charity and community work on the side.

Cheers,

The Catholic Church should not choose that.

giving a home to a child who needs one is something Christ stands for. Love. Help. sincerity.

I am a Christian, and I think that its important to not follow the old traditions or rules set by a church, but to follow the Gospel of Christ.

WWJD?

there are no reasons to not adopt a child and give them an opportunity for a life they may never have.
Absolutely. Adopting a child is most certainly supported under a Catholic marriage. The only kicker is that you have to promise to raise your kids Catholic whether they be from procreation or adoption.
If you get married in a catchalic church you are free the second you leave because there is a seperation of church and state.
I really don't know much about catholics, but check with your local catholic church.
yes you can adopt in the Catholic Church.
Of course.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!

of course you can!

It all depends. . .

No, having children is not a requirement. Sterile couples cannoty have children, naturally, but can still marry. It's impotent couples that cannot marry.

As far as the Church is concerned, with or without sterility figuring into the whole thing.

That all depends. . . Assuming you and yours will be sexually active, once married, sex HAS TO be open to the possibility of life.

You cannot use artificial contraception as a means to an end.

You and yours will HAVE TO become adept at using NFP. Every Catholic Diocese has at least one person qualified to instruct on how to use NFP. Find out who this person is in your Diocese, contact him or her, and begin learning about NFP. When done properly, ther is a 99% success rate. Logic alone suggests NFP is the best option, especially when artificial contraception bests at 70%.
