Is it considered a legal change of name if you take your husbands name when you get married?

Im asking b/c I graduated college after getting married but my given name is on my diploma, not married name. When I got married,I was told that I can continue using my maiden name if I want.So is taking your husband's name even considered a legal change of name?? What are other ways you can legally change your name?Is it considered a legal change of name if you take your husbands name when you get married?
You have to go to town hall and fill out a request form.

FYI.. you get put back in the mix for jury duty when you change your name.. and will most likely get picked in 6months afterIs it considered a legal change of name if you take your husbands name when you get married?
Yes, taking your husband's name is considered a legal change of name (if you do, in fact, choose to take his name and then have your legal ID changed to reflect your new last name).

Other ways to legally change your last name would be via divorce, adoption (some adopted children's names are changed to match their parents'), or if you just want to change your last name. I have a friend who just didn't like hers, so she filed a name change with the court. Also, in states where gay marriage isn't legal, some gay couples still live like a married couple where they share a household and a last name, so they file a change of last name with the court system (same procedure as anybody else who just wants to change their last name).

Hope this helps!
It's legal, but you need to change your name on your social secutiry card before it REALLY takes legal effect. I took my husbands name when we got married, and now thats the name on my driver's license, social security card and everything else.

To change your name on your social, take your birth certificate, marriage license and old social to the Social Security Admin and pay like 10 bucks or so to change it, once you have your new social, you can change the name on your divers license.

You can also change your name by going to the Probate Court and pay the filing fees and stuff just to have a different name, and doing the social security and drivers license thing afterward. But, you can get turned down at the probate court. But since you're married, you can take his name no problem.
Yes, taking your husband's name is legal but when you do that you also need to change your drivers license, social security, notify your bank, creditors, etc.

You can also legally change your name by going to the courthouse, paying a fee, and changing it to anything you desire (within reason).
In order to have legally changed your name you would've had to have done it through the Social Security Office...it would then be changed on your social security card. Until then, your maiden name is still your legal name even though you may sign things with your husbands last name.
Taking your husbands name and actually going about changing it ie with social security, and DMV is what makes it actually legal -

Not everyone takes their spouses last name - its not an automatic given unless you take the steps to actually change it

Hope I made sense
Yeah, because if you change your name in marriage you get a certificate saying that his name is your last name now. You could always hyphenate (maiden-husband's), so people would still know who you are.
Yes, because you have to fill out legal paper work.
